Gone Away ~ The journal of Clive Allen in America

A Poem (I think)
11/02/2005

Mad objects to my putting poetry in this blog but, when it's all you've got, what can you do? This is a little thing I wrote years ago when I was still hitchhiking in Africa. I have had to drag the depths of my memory for it and the second line is a substitute as I just can't recall the the original. It was something like that anyway.

Hitchhiker's Moon

Zap!
Cold moonlight breaks
Through garage lavatory window.

Wonders weary bum
Asleep in the pissoir of Pietersburg:
Were you there?
Vague shadow glimpse
Did you piss and go
In the bright headlamp hand
Of night?

Clive

Way
Mad should be glad that Gone can hone and shape such words so fair. But then I think, here at the brink; was he wearing underwear?

For it seems to me that to travel free across a continent without the cares of underwears is bliss, and Heaven-sent.

Oh, it is good that some things remain secret, yes I do believe that is so. As Google ads usually relate to content on the page, is it odd that this one says "Landscape Artist"? I must object to anyone objecting to poetry that is such as this and definitely not objectionable in the least.

An object lesson, no doubt. ;)

Yes, that is interesting, that Google should find nothing more closely related than landscape artists to put with this. Perhaps they are still stuck on the Art posting...

Poetry not only tests our skills at writing, but also our abilities to paint a picture. Here I can clearly see the lavatory shining in the cool moonlight, and yes, right there, I also see the naked bum. Is it my imagination? No, it is you in the dark of night hoping that a quick piss will make everything allright.

Your words leave us with images that take us back to a time in your life. We enjoy them, and with time even Mad will see the beauty of such prose.

Hmm, it seems this one needs a little interpretation. However, in line with my policy of art never needing explanation, I will just say that the meaning of "bum" in the poem is the American one, not the British i.e. it means a vagrant or hobo.

Now this is interesting since in Western Pennsylvania, "bum" is the other interpretation. Had I read that as a person from Philadelphia, I would have caught your meaning. I guess we all see things from our particular point of view. But not to worry, I only caught a glimpse of your "bum".

Have you ever noticed that shadows cast are often much larger than the object the light hits? hmmmmmm Glenni (A fair dinkum decorous ozzie)

Gone Away
.oO(I think people are getting far more out of this poem than I ever intended)

Okay, it's a lousy poem so I'd better explain it. It describes a moment that happened to me while hitchhiking in Africa. Kim and I had become stuck in Pietersburg for the night and the only place we could find to sleep was a gas station toilet (it was fairly big). During the night I awoke suddenly and I thought I saw a shadow just disappearing out of the toilet. To this day I don't know if anyone was there but it struck me as amusing that someone may have entered the place for relief only to find two disreputables wrapped in sleeping bags on the floor. I still wonder whether the guy just left or took a leak before doing so...

Hey Ned, It seems we are alone here on this bog, oops blog, was there anything you wanted to, about blots on Landscapes for instance.

Ned
I knew exactly what he meant, I don't know what he is going on about. Sheesh, I hate it when people explain art. I read a blog recently on why you should never do that.

Dear Ned, I am in complete and utter agreeance with yourself. We knew we had interpreted correctly what the Author had expounded. As to not explaining, well I'm sure I've heard somewhere that Artists are to 'show and not tell'. I leave it up to another to find a WAY to say be GONE an END to telling Glenni

Ah, greetings Piggy, good to see you out and about. And thank you for the kind comments on the poem.

This is not Blogger; my son, Mad, is a web developer and he created this blog for me on his own site. Do you like it? It's done with ASP.NET, I believe. You would know more about that than I do, of course.

As to making a blog more popular, I wrote a post about that just recently. Have a look at number 49, Oh Blog it!. That says just about all I've learned so far. If you go to the Gone Archives section in the navigation bar, that gives you a list of all my posts to date and you can go directly to the one you want from there.

Good luck with the blog, Piggy; I will drop in occasionally to see how you're doing. And you're welcome to return anytime. :)
