Gone Away ~ The journal of Clive Allen in America

Gone Blogging
16/06/2006
I must apologize to regular readers for the slow posting rate over the last week or two. The problem is that I have taken on another blog in the Syntagma network. While posts for the new blog do not consume a great deal of time, it has meant that my thoughts have been concentrated upon it and it has proved difficult to come up with new ideas for the Gone Away blog as frequently as I'd like.

Hopefully, I'll be able to return to regular postings within the next few days. Twice a week is my aim for Gone Away, whereas I am updating the new blog every day except Sundays.

In the meantime, you might be interested in the new blog. It is called Formula 1 Latest and, as its name suggests, it deals exclusively with news and views of F1 racing. As a taster, here's a photo of the great Ayrton Senna in action at the Monaco Grand Prix:

Way
As I was just now telling my child bride, Alicia, Clive has way more talents than I ever realized.

"What do you mean?", she asked, as she shot past my stand here at the keyboard.

I tried unsucessfully to stop her so I could explain what I meant by that statement, but it was no use. In a fraction, she was gone away. These American women are a perplexing lot, if not fast and on the move.

Speaking of fast...race cars. Now I like that idea. Show me a crazed man pinned behind the wheel of a legalized bottle rocket on wheels, and you have my attention for a few minutes. Man, I love mayhem.

There's nothing like it, is there, Way? Better than the gladiators of old, faster than a speeding Superman and more thrills and spills than a barrelful of cats in water. Glad you approve. :D

Just know that I will certainly stop by to enjoy hurling a few fresh peanut shells occasionally, and that altho high-end tech-talk only confuses this bent caveman, I find myself inexplicably attracted to the chaos of almost any sort of automobile race track, along with the dust, the lights and the noise, whereby I become so absorbed in all the goings-on that any chatter from nearby bothers me not.

But if you have any dirt on any of these drivers...

Gone Away
Yes, I must apologize for my occasional lapses into techspeak when writing for the F1 blog, Way. I have to assume a certain amount of knowledge in my readers or each article would be ten times as long. But I'll try to keep things understandable for all.

Dirt on the drivers? The trouble with these modern guys is that they have to be so darn fit that they don't get time to do anything naughty. Although they do say that Kimi Raikkonen spends many nights in raucous night clubs. And back in the fifties and sixties there were some pretty wild guys involved and parties could get really hectic, I believe.

Come to think of it, even today's drivers lose their tempers on occasion. For instance, there was the time Nelson Piquet tried to remove another driver's helmet without undoing the straps first. Hmmm, there may be a rich vein of posts in this one...

fragile industries
Love your writing, GA, but I'll bide my time here. My first ex-husband (that makes me sound like Elizabeth Taylor, really there are only two exes) was a car nut of major proportions. The only bathroom reading material was a foot-high stack of Motor Trend, etc. So, been there, done that, got the divorce decree. Not because of the car thing, but there are some lingering associations. Nonetheless, have fun with it!

No problem, Fragile, I understand completely. After all, it would be a boring world if we all shared exactly the same passions.

Kurt
Of course you have to remind me of my third-favorite type of racing when I'm living in an apartment with no convenient spot to hook up my PC steering wheel and get in some wheel time. If there's one thing I really miss while living in NYC, it's driving (if there are two, they're driving and driving fast!).

A kindred spirit, Kurt! Driving is so much fun, it ought to be illegal. But at my age, I have to forget the dreams of racing and just write about it. ;)

Kurt
Well, as someone who no longer has a chance to drive much, have you looked into simulations? A small investment in a decent PC wheel/pedal set are occasionally a good substitute. I could definitely recommend a few, depending on the type and era of racing you're most interested in.

Gone Away
I dare not, Kurt. I'm a sucker for video games and, if I had a driving or racing simulation, I'd never get any work done! In the past I've had racing games and I know how addictive they are.

Fair enough, Clive. I've certainly had my writing output suffer to the amount of things I try to get done (okay, gaming included), I'd hate to think of that as the universal writers' condition. That, or I just pick the worst weeks to sit down and really focus on writing... between the end of fiscal year pressing all my deadlines up, my promotion (okay, diagonal promotion), a 5-mile run tonight, and a fancy 'event' tomorrow night I should've figured I wasn't going to get much done.
