Catalunya MotoGP '09
15/06/2009
And I thought it was going to be a comparatively boring season in MotoGP this year but I'm happy to admit to being very, very wrong. A third of the way through the fixtures and three riders are equal at the top of the table. This season has turned into an epic struggle of the greatest riders in the world.

The greatest of all time proved today why he's called that. The final pass against Jorge has me baffled; I simply cannot understand how he did it. He may be the ageing champion but I believe he is still at the height of his powers.

Lorenzo's ride was just sublime, I really thought he'd done it, that he'd won and if he was racing anyone but Rossi I'd have been right. I said last year that he'd be contesting the championship this year and yes, I know it's hardly a stunning prophecy but I'm gratified by how right I was. He is the King in waiting. It will be a Yamaha mounted champion this year but right now I can't tell you which one it will be.

Did you see Stoner in the winner's enclosure after the race? He was physically exhausted. Which says to me that he is dragging that Ducati much further up the grid than it has any right to be. He's the real deal, as good as Rossi but sadly the fickle Duc will stop him taking the championship this year (unless it suddenly comes good of course).

Roll on my favourite race of the year: Assen!

I read somewhere (probably here) that Ducati are working on the bike to make it more rideable for everyone, not just Stoner. Is it possible that, in making it more flexible, they are screwing it up for Casey?

Incidentally, if things in F1 don't get sorted pretty quickly, I might be depending on you to guide me through this weird world of MotoGP. In which case, you're just gonna have to write more often...

Yes Ducati have finally realised that the career ruining status of their machine means that no one will want to ride for them. They're trying new things for Kalio and Hayden but obviously on Stoner's bike they're following his lead. I suspect that what's happened is that Yamaha and, to a lesser extent, Honda have made a leap forward and Ducati are struggling to make the same leap. The Yamahas are as nimble a package as ever but now they're faster down the straight than the Ducs.

I've started posting again regularly and I'll happily keep you informed on MotoGP. Incidentally keep an eye on SBK too!

The final two laps of the Catalunya race are probably the two single most incredilbe laps of racing I've ever seen, simply stunning how those two passed each other on corners repeatedly where no-one else can (bar Stoner perhaps). As for that final corner move, that was simply incredible, even I believed Lorenzo had done enough to get the race but Rossi proved why he's the greatest of all time.

I don't think I've ever seen Rossi as challenged and pushed as hard as he is by Stoner and Lorenzo since the start of his career. Gone are the days where he could toy with the pack or the leader. He's obviously worked very hard on his starts too as they used to let him down by pushing down a place or two which he'd then have to fight back.

All in all it was an incredible race and very interesting for the races to come, I've never seen a Rider/Driver look as exhausted as Stoner after the race, he's making that bike achieve way more than possible and his exhaustion surely gave an indication if the bike's actual competitiveness.

3 riders on equal points, bring on Assen a notoriously hard to predict race.

Cheers Poots! It was some race indeed. I was shaking after the last lap with sheer adrenaline. If Assen is even half the race it promises to be we're in for a treat.

I sneek a look at most MotoGP races (don't tell Gone tho', I haven't mentioned it yet) ;) I snuck in here to calm my nerves with all the shennanagins going on in F1. Hope you don't mind?

I watched the race spellbound, one of the best I have seen. How long will Rossi be able to keep ahead of a pack that bays for his blood with every race? He is mercurial.

Oh yes, re previous post - I can recommend the BSA Bantam as the bike of choice. They last forever (unless you forget to put oil in it) and are quite cheap. If that doesn't do it for you then a BSA A10 with sidecar is also on the list. (Tho' they have a tendency to collapse when hit by bus-stops...)

Hey Fractal, cheers for dropping by! I won't tell my Dad you were over here commenting on those nasty dangerous bikes ;)

That was some race eh? Mercurial. That's one of the best descriptions I've heard for Rossi. He truly is mercurial, how he made that final move I'll never know.

How long can he stay ahead? I have not the faintest idea but my word it's good watching him fight for the top step!

Hmmm BSAs... aren't they a little to find parts for these days? As for a sidecar, I'd rather walk.

I saw the race. I agree that the last two laps were what racing should be all about. Even more so than Rossi and Lorenzo, though, I got a kick out of listening to Jonathan Green announcing the thing. I enjoy his commentary immensely!

Jonathan Green winds me up! He commentates for SBK and I'd gladly strangle the man; his mixed metaphors and muddled comments infuriate me. Glad you saw the race though Irondad, will you see Assen?
