Nicky Hayden MotoGP World Champion
30/10/2006
The unthinkable happened on Sunday, Rossi lost his crown. The huge crowd gathered at Valencia watched in stunned silence as Valentino low-sided off and then failed to produce a miracle to get back to the top five spots. I too found it hard to believe but it really did happen, Hayden really is the new world champion. Like Alonso in F1 he has gained his crown by consistently finishing well; he may not be a genius of Rossi's stature but he is fast and consistent; good on him I say.

What I find interesting though is this: Two weeks ago Tony Elias piped Rossi to the finish line by six thousandths of a second which cost Rossi five points and what was the points deficit between Hayden and Rossi? Five points...

If Elias hadn't turned into a man possessed at Estoril then Rossi would be world champion today. Also worth asking is - who took Rossi off in the first race of the season? Hmm, it was that Elias fellow wasn't it! It seems Honda has found an anti-Rossi assassin in Tony Elias.

Hmmm, reading that Wikipedia account of Elias pipping Rossi to the win, it seems to me that he beat the great Italian fair and square. In which case, Rossi can hardly complain.

Alonso won the F1 championship this year by more than finishing well, however. He grabbed just as many GPs as Schumacher and had more bad luck than the German (who doesn't?). The plain fact is that he's better than Schumacher - just as fast but steadier under pressure in the race. Okay, he's hot-blooded off the circuit but they don't take points away for that. ;)

Elias did win fair and square, my point is merely that Elias' win was the difference between winning and losing the championship for Rossi. As for Alonso I kinda meant more last season than this one. :p

Gary
Mad, I don't even know what to say here. Nicky Hayden has always been a punk to me. A talented punk, yes, but a punk nonetheless.

In 1997, when I was a motojournalist writing a piece on the AMA Races at Brainerd Int'l Raceway, I was trying to have a conversation with the crewchief of the Honda team. Young Nicky was stunting about in the garage on some pitbike, and said crewchief went over and cuffed him upside the head!

He said, "Not here, Nicky! Go outside and play!"

But I suppose we all grow up, eventually. That was almost ten years ago. Now that he's a multi-millionaire, and I am poorer than I was in the days when I watched him being a punk, maybe the joke's on me.

Hell, no maybe about it.

Still, I can't say I'm happy to see him representing us. That whole Hayden clan have always been a little too Southern Trailer Trash / Nascar fan for my taste. My country is going to Hell in a handbasket, with Bush Inc. stamped on the side.

And there's not a damned thing I can do about it...

So, how was your day?

Ride well,
=gc=

Sad to say Gary but I'm very impressed you knew the young Nicky! :p And I know you'll find it hard to believe but I think he's a good ambassador for your country, you see we don't hear his accent the same way as you; we have no preconceptions when a southerner speaks (well a lot less than an American anyway). He's carried himself well this season, at times he's been under enourmous pressure but only under the most extreme provocation has his facade of cool southern calm cracked (when his teammate punted him off the track allowing Rossi to finally get ahead in the championship). I think you're right, the boy's grown up and grown up ok.He's also pretty darn fast, not as fast as the genius that is "the Doctor" but pretty good nonetheless. My day was good... I'm riding my little bandit 400 now it's winter and that's keeping me entertained. But how are you!?

How am I? Older, poorer, and more cynical than I was ten years ago. Just waiting for the axe to fall at work. Tired of running the treadmill of capitalist wage slavery just to survive.

Hey, you asked.

Ride well,

Damn Gary, you sound like you need a holiday mate!

Sorry mate. I probably shouldn't log-on when I'm feeling low.

It's election season in these "United States", and we are less united than ever. What I see are two parties, both sponsored by big business, jockeying for a position which will have the same net result on the hard-working middle class, no matter which gains control. The goal being to drive every wage-earning fool in this country down to the chattel-slavery level that they enjoy with their new facilities in China, India, and Third World countries across the globe.

"Free Trade" is just code for the New Feudalism, and the vast majority of human beings are going to be peasants before long.

But you probably know this, so why am I wasting your time?

Ride well,

Gary your comments are always very welcome on my blog and I sympathise with how you feel about your country's leadership right now. My government is intent on building the first eFascist state and I can see a huge economic bust coming but, hey, we both still have our bikes and you have your lovely family so some things in this crazy world are doing ok. :D

Ah yes, the Ogri Maxim: "Stuff everything! I've always got my bike!"

What was I thinking?

OK, happy now. Thanks.

Ride well,

Sunshine, pretty roses, beautiful women, awesome motorcycle rides, and great beer!! God love Guiness.

Consider this a dose of vaccine to Gary's black clouds!!

I agree with the "where am I going and why am I in this handbasket?" direction of things.

I don't hear much about you anymore, Mad. Kind of miss ya.

Are you hinting at possible lay-offs at your job, Gary?

Sorry to take up space to query Gary, Mad, it was just here that the thread started.

Good to see you over here Irondad, you are always welcome to comment on anything and everything; I'm not one of these people who insists that topics are rigidly stuck to. I wondered if Gary was refering to lay-offs as well? I really must get around to posting something on my blog...
