IE7
02/08/2005
Well I downloaded the Beta of Internet Explorer 7 from MSDN yesterday. So I thought I'd put up my first thoughts :

Bit disappointed in one way, as it's the same render engine, we'll have to wait for later Beta's to see the new one. Shame I was looking forward to seeing what kind of CSS 2 compliance IE is bringing to the table.
I love the tabs, IE's needed them for years now. I was surprised to see the tab bar above the toolbar though. It seems odd to put the tool bar anywhere except where we expect it to be.
Transparent PNG support: About time MS, we've only been asking for years.
The bit I like best is IE's new RSS support. Land on a page with a feed linked to it and the feeds button lights up, click it and the resultant dialog and it shows you the feed nicely formatted (I assume that if there's XSLT file for the feed it uses that formatting instead) as a page with the option to add the feed to favourites (see the screen shot below).
So far I've not seen any instability or issues but it's early days. I'll keep you posted.

Humph, so IE finally gets some of the things other browsers have had for years and suddenly everyone thinks it's wonderful...

C'mon Dad admit you're impressed with how feeds look in IE7... ;)

I am nonplussed. Anxious, of course, to get rid of my *html's, but I sincerely hope there is further tab control in beta2 -- it turns out I totally rely on double-clicking a tab to close it, and this tab setup is fairly stern.

Very pretty, but I still prefer the way FF handles them. And, if I want the fancy view that IE7 gives, why, I just open Bloglines... :D

Oh it shan't be replacing my beloved Firefox yet but it's nice to see that the unenlightened masses who don't even know there are other browsers will be catching the rest of us up soon.

The dirty little secret about IE7B1 is that it's IE6 with a fancy coat on -- both of the browsers I have that run over the IE engine still function without a blip -- something not to be expected when offered a "full rewrite". Alas, I don't want to be like 90% of the development community who went batshit over it (I really thought Mr Mezzoblue was calmer that that).

And about the tabs being over the toolbar -- I remember reading in the IEblog that basically this was the "best way" (read easiest) to preserve the VB methods in web apps that rely on multiple windows -- so basically the tool bar is unique to every tab -- meaning that its not one window with many tabs, but one window on top of another. I have a hunch this is the reasoning behind the naked address bar and buttons up top -- less to worry with, less to break.

Ahhh that makes sense Josh and goes a long way to explain why MS would break its own rules. As for it being the same engine under the hood I'd been told that before I downloaded it, so whilst being disappointed I didn't feel hard done by. I'm content to wait for Beta 2. Umm why aren't you asleep?

That's a very good question, actually. My sleeping habits are all screwy lately.
