MadTV: The journal

Why did no one tell me before?

The following only applies to XP:

Right-click on your desktop, select properties, select the Appearance tab, click the Effects button and on the effects dialogue there's a drop-down that says "Use the following method to smooth the edges of screen fonts", select that drop-down and set it to "ClearType". Voila! Everything is now much prettier, including this site.

Now for all I know everyone who reads this has ClearType enabled and is thinking I'm a numpty for not knowing about it after three years of using XP but for those who don't this is a groovy discovery.

Oh No. No, no,no. This is horrible. It feels like i'm looking through some very cheap glasses. Obviously doesn't suit the cheap LCD screen I have at work.
I will try this at home but Oh No.

It does look better on my decent CRT monitor at home. Damn those company buyers who put style over substance.

I'm still a fan of the humble CRT, in fact at work I have a three CRT screen set up. TFT's are nice especially on the desk space front but you can't beat a really high quality Diamondtron...

Yeah bubs, ain't that a kicker? I used XP for 6 months before noodling that one through - but it is a pain for us web design types, always having to see our work get all blotchy on another machine.

About LCDs : they react in very odd ways to ClearType smoothing,
relying instead on something called Subpixel smoothing w/ hints, usually done by the proprietary video card/driver. It's a function of the shape of the actual pixels within the matrix.

Do you know about the optional Copy To Folder and Move To Folder in the Explorer.exe context menu? That would be second on my list of must-dos :-)

I like it when a budding SciFi dork pokes fun at a techie. Some sort of irony there, just can't put a name to it. :P
Well bubs, it requires a little gumption (to wit, backing up and editing your registry) but here is the Oreilly article on it: http://tinyurl.com/chan2
