Adverts 12/01/2005 Well MadTV has made its first tentative step into the world of advertising. If you look under the navigation you'll see a pair of MadTV colour co-ordinated google adverts. We are unsure about the new development and this is very much an experiment. One half of the MadTV board is claiming that this is a "sell out", the other half is saying "shut up, hosting costs money." If you have any feelings on the subject give me a shout. These ads may stay or they may go... Mad
josh Google had to go out on a limb codewise to idiot-proof adsense - and consequently, the javascript that is used is unruly. Does anyone else notice the bounce when scrolling? I do however enjoy the fact that both ads are for curry. It is a mitigating factor. Date Added: 13/01/2005
Gone Away Bounce? I find myself encouraging them - "Keep up there, little fellers, keep up!" But Josh is right as usual; if we have to have ads, let them be for curry! Just might follow up on the Indian curry one myself... Date Added: 13/01/2005
Mad I can't see that effect for some reason Josh but I have noticed it on Google adwords elsewhere. I always thought it was a frames thing, now I know its not. I love that you can customise the colours of these ads... Date Added: 13/01/2005
josh Did you install that BHO that tells you which ads a page would recieve? I think it is installed in the rightclick context menu. Date Added: 13/01/2005
Mad BHO? I'm very new to this advertising thing but I did see something to do with ad content in the adwords site menu somewhere. I thought that google's indexing of a page changed the content of the ads? Date Added: 13/01/2005
josh Nah Browser Helper Object - There is one that google offers that lets you preview what any page you surf to would have as ads. BHO's are more often than not spyware, but I trust google for some reason. Date Added: 14/01/2005

Gone Away What is this, a library? But I notice that one of the ads is now for Mad TV. Now there's targeted advertising for you! Date Added: 19/01/2005
Simon Jessey I don't make a lot of money from AdSense, but ANY money is better than no money, I suppose. I've made about $20 in the 5 months I've been running them, which is enough to pay for a couple of month's worth of hosting. In fact, I make more money from content-based Amazon links.I've been quite impressed at Google's ability to serve relevant ads, although most weblogs are bound to get lots of blog-related stuff. If anything, it demonstrates how important it is for blog content to be rich and unique, rather than generic. Date Added: 19/01/2005
Simon Jessey Dude. You should add something to convert newline characters into line breaks - all the paragraphs in my comment are missing. Also, bake a cookie for my details so that I don't have to keep typing them in. Oh, and I see the "wobbly ads" on my WinXP/Firefox setup too. I've never seen that before. Date Added: 19/01/2005
Mad Oops. Caught out. I've been meaning to do something about line breaks etc for ages Simon; just a question of finding the time. In the interim you're more than welcome to use HTML in your posts, just remember each comment is inside a set of paragraph tags. As for the cookies... um... would you believe I've never done cookies before? So I've been putting it off. *Underscores cookies on his to-do list* Date Added: 19/01/2005
josh I have to concur :> I do believe that the wobble is the result of the static background requiring a complete repaint of the screen for every increment of scroll; the javascript takes a fraction of a second longer to document.write. A tad annoying, but mooney is mooney :> Date Added: 19/01/2005
Mad Thanks a lot guys, I'm now completely obsessed by Google ads "bouncing". Every page I go to that has Google ads, I spend at least a minute working the scroll bars to check for bounce. End conclusion? They all bounce to a greater or lesser degree and you may well be right Josh; the static background seems to exasperate the effect.Well tough, I really like my background and it's not changing for Google adsense. Date Added: 20/01/2005
josh Or you could shitcan the adsense and tough out the 5 quid a month, eh? A joke, not a heartfelt suggestion. :> Date Added: 20/01/2005
